How to Stay Focused in a Shared Office Environment

Tips for Productivity and Managing Distractions at Spot Co-Working

Working in a shared office space can be incredibly energising. You’re surrounded by driven professionals, creative thinkers, and the gentle hum of productivity. But with all that buzz, staying focused can sometimes be a challenge, especially when Zoom calls, casual chats, and background movement become part of your daily soundtrack.

At Spot Co-Working, we’ve designed our space to support your focus and your flow. Here are some of our favourite tips to help you stay on track while working in a dynamic, shared environment.

1. Use Designated Quiet Areas for Deep Work

If you have tasks that require your full attention, try starting your day with a clear intention and head to one of our quieter corners. Early mornings are often the most focused hours at Spot, perfect for knocking out high-concentration tasks before meetings and momentum build up.

2. Take Advantage of Our Phone Booth for Calls

Need to jump on a Zoom or take a private client call? Our quiet phone booth is just the spot. It’s perfect for short calls and virtual meetings when you need a quiet, private space to stay connected without distractions.

3. Schedule Breaks in Our Relaxed Common Areas

Stepping away from your desk doesn’t have to mean breaking your focus. Spot has a variety of breakout spaces including common area spaces with desks and armchairs designed for short resets. Sometimes all it takes is a change of scenery, a quick chat with a neighbour, or a fresh coffee to get back on track.

4. Fuel Your Focus with Great Coffee

Spot Co-Working has coffee machines on all our co-working levels, so a fresh brew is never far away when you need to recharge and refocus.

For something a little extra, Johnny Come Lately on the ground floor is a favourite among members. The café serves excellent coffee, fresh food, and offers a relaxed atmosphere that’s perfect for a quick break or informal meeting.

5. Book a Meeting Room for Private Collaboration

For team catch-ups, workshops or longer client discussions, Spot offers a range of meeting rooms and boardrooms that can be booked quickly and easily. You can reserve a room through your personal account, by using the iPads located at each meeting room door, or with help from our friendly concierge team at reception.

6. Batch Tasks and Plan Your Day

With shared environments, interruptions can come unexpectedly. To stay ahead of them, try grouping your work into chunks such as emails, creative work, admin, and meetings. Planning your day in blocks helps minimise the impact of minor distractions when they arise.

7. Embrace the Community at the Right Times

One of the biggest perks of co-working is the community. While staying focused is key, so is building connections. Join a lunchtime chat in the kitchen, collaborate over coffee, or take part in Spot’s events. When you’re intentional about when you engage, it becomes easier to focus when you need to.
